EC-GIN Project Survey of Grid Application Network Requirements
EC-GIN project is seeking cooperation in collecting information about the network requirements of grid applications as perceived by application developers, administrators and users in order to improve the performance of grid applications
Are the network requirements of grid applications different from those of other applications? How is grid traffic different from other types of traffic? What sort of network enhancements do we need in order to improve the performance of grid applications? These and other questions are examined in the work done by EC-GIN, a European-funded project which aims to exploit the network in a way that better suits the needs of grid applications.
EC-GIN is inspired by the argument that current Internet technologies are unsuitable for grid communications. One of the key objectives of EC-GIN is to design an API that introduces a level of programming abstraction designed to improve the performance of network communications across grids. The API will provide abstraction for services such as distributed data storage, QoS and advanced network functionality.
The type of services that the API will provide should meet the requirements of grid applications. Hence, understanding these requirements is crucial for the design phase of the API. It might be easy enough to predict these requirements according to how we perceive grid application demands. However, a close look at some currently deployed grid applications would yield a more realistic set of requirements.
For this purpose, EC-GIN has embarked on an investigation of what grid applications need. It has put together a survey that would yield results that will guide the architectural choices in the design of our API. In this survey, EC-GIN looks at different characteristics of grid applications, their middleware environments, their traffic footprints and, most importantly, their network requirements. The survey also is anticipated to offer information about the networking trends of grid applications.
EC-GIN is seeking cooperation in collecting information about the network requirements of grid applications as perceived by application developers, administrators and users. The questionnaire can be accessed through this link: .
At the end of the questionnaire, participants are given the option to obtain feedback on the findings of the survey. The whole process should not take more than 15 minutes.
EC-GIN is on the road to change the way the network is utilized in order to make it more efficient for grid applications, and survey input will help with this mission.
